Rest and Relaxation

Hey SparkFire Girls,

If you’re anything like me, you know the struggle of going to school for 6 hours a day, then spending 2 hours on an after-school sport, then coming home to work on all the homework you got assigned, plus studying for those tests or quizzes you have coming up.  With a schedule like this, things really start to pile up!  Sometimes I get so caught up in completing my assignments or trying to reach that goal time in cross country, I forget that I need to relax. Nobody can live their life full of stress, in order to relax there are so many things you can do! Reading, Arts and Crafts, taking a walk, exercising, or sleeping.

Arts and Crafts: I love love l o v e arts and crafts. I’m always that girl in camp who signs up for crafts year after year and ends up being the eldest among many 12 year old girls making friendship bracelets all day long.  Crafts let me express my creative side -- whether it's from making a gift to give a friend or just something that I can use as decoration around my house, crafts is a therapeutic way to help me relax.  

Reading: Books are definitely among my many loves. Once I find a book that I love, I will not put it down until I am finished with it or until it's 2 o’clock in the morning and every chapter ends in a cliffhanger, and I can’t not know what is going to happen next.  This is usually about the time my mother comes in and tells me to “shut it down”.  Reading is an escape from the real world; in books I can be anyone I want to be, a wizard or a princess. 

Walking:  The other day we had our first day where the weather was above the temperature that means Grace will not leave her home.  So, to celebrate the event my mom and I went for a walk around our neighborhood.  I like taking walks during the warm months because it is a nice way to exercise that is not too strenuous.  I love being among nature and just being alone with my thoughts and walking helps me to process things easier .  When I take a walk, I feel like I am stepping out of my everyday life and just appreciate nature and being outside on a gorgeous day.

Now, I know some people think they aren’t the best at crafts, or won’t read to save their life, or enjoy staying inside and watching Netflix as opposed to taking a walk on a nice spring day.  But that's okay, do whatever feeds your soul, whatever helps you take a weight off your shoulders from a long stressful day.  This week I challenge you to set aside time at least once during the weekdays to relax and do something you love.  Even go further and do it everyday.
