Inspiration Because #SHEPERSISTED

Hi SparkFire Girls,

It’s Crystal again, sharing about amazing Girls Who Spark inspiration to me, as a high school sophmore.

Inspiration comes to all of us in many different ways. Somewhere in life, we get hurt or fail, but there's always this person in your head who would inspire us to outshine ourselves. I want to share with you about a beautiful woman who is my motivator and my inspiration.

Michaela DePrince

Michaela DePrince is one of the young women who inspire me enormously. She is one of the most famous African-American ballerinas representing a new era of ballet and dance. She was adopted from Sierra Leone during wartime. Inspired by a picture of a ballerina she found while in Sierra Leone, Michaela started dancing when she was 4 years old, putting tireless amounts of effort into her training. Being black in a white community, she pursed her ballet dream as well as simultaneously fighting racial discrimination. "America wasn't ready for a black ballerina" at that time, but she did not give up even when a dance teacher told her mom that black dancers weren't worth investing money in. Michaela was never discouraged by those words. She fought for herself and showed everyone that she is an amazing dancer by getting accepted in Dance Theatre of Harlem as the youngest dancer. She is now the only African-descent dancer in the Dutch National Ballet.

Michaela has taught me that where you come from doesn't make you who you are. There's always going be someone who thinks you are not good enough. Don't let them stop you from chasing your dreams. Because all your dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.

Be Proud of Who You Are

For my younger self and all the amazing girls who might be reading this right now, love yourself for who you are. I know it's really hard to do it especially as a teenager. I don't even think I've accomplished that, but it will always be my goal. High school is hard no matter how many people say it's not. Don't let others tell you that you're not good enough, or your dreams are crazy, or it's not cool to not wear makeup and not have a boyfriend. People are unique, and there is a reason we are created that way. As we see in history, social standards change over time. So, instead of wishing you were someone else, be proud of who you are. You never know who had been looking at you wishing they were you.

“Love yourself for who you are and forget about who you are not.”

Be the Spark!
